FRIDAY NIGHT BBQ IN THE GARDEN AT HOMESPUN FOODS * 6-9 PM June 16th

We are so excited to announce that BBQ Master Jeremy James will be joining us tomorrow night (Friday June 16th) in the garden at Homespun for a very special barbecue from 6-9pm.   Chef Ty Beaty has prepared some delicious side dishes too, and we of course have all the wine and beer pairings to go with Jeremy's signature Cornish Hens and Pork Baby-Back Ribs.  It promises to be an amazing night for the folks who make it out.

For those of us at Homespun who have had the pleasure to interact and begin to get to know Jeremy, he is the type of person who puts you immediately at ease.  His charm is so natural, so quietly magnetic.  Having worked in the medical profession, having served people in that way, Jeremy recently made a choice to take care of people in a new way, by cooking food for them and nourishing their bodies and spirits.  Friends and family have told him for years now that he should take his love of food to the people, and after the loss of his father, and the stress of working at the hospital over the last few years, Jeremy decided to take the risk and finally make that dream a reality.    

Jeremy's BBQ is straight up delicious.  Like put your fork down, bite your knuckle and take a moment for yourself, delicious.  It is that good. 

I sat down with him this week to talk about his style and influences. 

Jeremy likes to say he cooks his barbecue from the outside in, the skin is the star, focusing on the texture and the crispness, achieved through a 24 hour slow brine where the meat submerged with onions, garlic, rosemary, thyme and other aromatics.  The next part of the process, Jeremy does a dry-rub where he really expresses the flavors of Antigua.  Here we find lots of fresh bright lemon with thyme, rosemary and sorrel.  The flavor is profound.  You remember it, you want more, you tell a friend.  

Jeremy feels like he learned his love of food from his grandmother in Antigua, where she worked over a wood fire, preparing food for all the locals in their family's grocery store.  It's just sort of always been there for him, says Jeremy, that natural way of taking care of people.  He says he feels there is a greater exchange that can happen over food, not just an exchange of capital-- some money for some food-- but an exchange of ideas, of understanding, of caring and kindness.  

And music, don't even get me started here, turns out Jeremy was a professional musician, touring with the likes of Atlantic Star and Bobby Brown as a guitarist, as well as having secured his own major label deal at one point with Capital Records.  His singing voice is effortlessly soulful, bounding with joy.

We might try to coax him to perform tomorrow if I can get it together to bring an old tube amp and a Fender Stratocaster down to Homespun tomorrow night.  You'll have to show up to find out.

BRUNCH IN BEACON | NEW MENU THIS WEEK | LUNCH

Hope everyone is doing well out there, new BRUNCH menu is below with a few new items, including the heavily-staff-anticipated Cheddar Biscuits dish with a housemade bacon jam that is-- indeed-- the jam.  We're really excited to debut that one tomorrow.   Also a new staple to the Lunch Menu for all week-long, Chef Ty also made a new Beet Hummus Sandwich on multigrain, which can be made Vegan if you leave off the feta, the dish has pickled red onion, arugula, cucumber, avocado and a house-made spicy seed relish that is made with toasted pumpkin and sunflower seeds, fresh herbs, pickled chilies, cayenne, & extra virgin olive oil.  The dish is colorful, fresh, wholesome and delicious.

On February 2nd, we will be opening for one evening only to host the Common Ground Farm CSA U-Pick Mixer.  Common Ground will have a limited number of CSA U-Pick slots available for sale for the 2023 growing season, and this is your chance to come out and secure your share of the bounty.  Homespun will have small bites available, as well as $9 glasses of house wine , and I think I'll open a special bottle of wine or two for $15/glass.  I don't know what it will be yet, but it will definitely be something to remind us that wine is agriculture.  At least good wine is!

We will also have live music performed by Noga Cabo, and I'm really excited to see the space livened up in that way, and we'll play some records between sets.  So mark the calendar and come on out, it will be a fun night to meet your neighbors & fellow farmers .

Join us on the farm and enjoy harvesting your very own share of the freshest possible vegetables while getting outside, maybe getting a little dirty, and getting involved in our community. We’ll grow a selection of tried-and-true summer favorites like kale, cucumbers, carrots, lettuce, and tomatoes, and you’ll also pick unique varieties of veggies like shishito peppers, rosa bianca eggplants, and tomatillos. Each share will include fresh herbs and flowers. Each week you'll receive an email newsletter, letting you know what you can expect to pick along with helpful tips and recipes to help you plan your shopping and cooking.

It's here, we're now officially open seven days a week again for the first time since March 2020!  

It's been an absolutely wild ride trying to keep this going through the pandemic, and I'm so grateful to our staff and to our community for always coming out how they do.    Thank you all so much!!

Hi,

Thank you to everyone who came out last week and filled our dining room one last time for dinner for NYE, it was such a blast to serve you all and ring in the new year.  We had hoped to do dinner again this evening, but unfortunately we have a staffing issue for tonight, and decided to call it for this evening.  So, it was a great season, but we have decided to button up and hibernate dinner for the wintertime.  We hope to bring it back in the spring/summer when things are busier in the town.

THAT SAID, WE HAVE A BIG ANNOUNCEMENT

Starting next Friday, Homespun launches a GRAND REOPENING, and returning to an OPEN SEVEN DAY A WEEK SCHEDULE.  You all asked for it, and we are going to do it!  So beginning next Friday, Homespun will be open every day for lunch during the week from 11-4, and then we will be open for BRUNCH on the weekends from 9-4.  We hope to keep this going, so please help us spread the word, tell a friend, tell a pet, tell anybody who will listen!  We would really appreciate that!

It's winter in Beacon, and things are slow all over, so please come out and support our local businesses and their staffs, we are so grateful for all of your support so we can keep doing what we love.

New Year's Eve at Homespun Foods

WEEKEND AT HOMESPUN 
 

Lots happening this week at Homespun.

We are open for Lunch and Dinner today, and then tomorrow for Brunch starting at 9am, and then a very special New Year's Eve Dinner tomorrow (see more on that below). 

Sunday, we will be open for New Year's Day Brunch, and then Monday we are back for Locals Lunch, where Hudson Valley locals get 10% off their meal.

NEW LUNCH SPECIALS TODAY

Chimichurri Chicken Sandwich -- marinated & grilled chicken thigh, avocado, pickled red onions, mixed greens, and chimichurri mayo on ciabatta. 

Chimichurri has parsley, cilantro, oregano, jalapeno, shallot, garlic, red pepper flakes, red wine vinegar, and olive oil. The chicken is marinated in chimichurri, grilled, and finished in the oven. It will be warmed when making the sandwich.  This can be made gluten free with bread substitution.

Chimichurri Mushroom Sandwich --  marinated & roasted mushrooms, avocado, pickled red onions, mixed greens, and vegan chimichurri mayo on ciabatta. 

The mushrooms are marinated with the chimichurri and roasted in the oven.  Today we are using trumpet mushrooms for the sandwich, warmed on the pick up.   This dish is Vegan, and can be made gluten free with bread substitution.

Also today we will have Mac n Cheese on the Kids Menu for $5.

NEW YEAR'S EVE DINNER & NEW YEAR'S DAY BRUNCH

On Saturday, we will have a New Year's Eve menu, everything will be served a la carte, and will include a complimentary glass of organic grower Champagne.  This is the real deal, not the industrially farmed bubbles we see too often in the world.  This is 'Grower Champagne' aka Farmer Fizz, and you don't want to miss it! 

Please write us if you would like to make a reservation at reservations@homespunfoods.com.  Dinner will be served from 5-9pm, so you can get home to see the ball drop, or just get yourself a nice restful night of sleep and start the new year feeling good!  (  <--- that's mostly for the parents out there ;) 

For real though, it is going to be a fun night, we are going to pop some really good Champagne and bring in 2023 right!  

Then on Sunday, we will host New Year's Day Brunch, which we expect to be busy, so please shoot us a note and make a reservation and we'll get you a table!  Who wants to be the first customer of the year?!

Hi everyone,

Happy holidays to everyone, I hope that this is a time of peace, joy and reflection for all.  For those who struggle during the holidays, we're thinking of you too, and wishing you ease through this time.  

We are open today for Lunch, so if you're running around on Main Street doing some last minute shopping at any number of our great retail shops, please stop in for a bite.  We also have lots of great craft beer, local cider and artisan products for perfect stocking stuffers and last minute gift ideas.

We will be closing up early today at 4pm, with no dinner service due to the storm that is rolling in.  Everybody stay safe out there.

We will open up an hour later tomorrow at 10am, and be open til 4pm for BRUNCH.  The menu is posted below and looks delicious, I'm up for the Good Luck Beans-- We just might need 'em in 2023!

NEW YEAR'S EVE DINNER & NEW YEAR'S DAY BRUNCH

Next week, we are very excited for Friday and Saturday dinner service.  On Saturday, we will have a New Year's Eve menu, everything will be served a la carte, and will include a complimentary glass of organic grower Champagne.  This is the real deal, not the industrially farmed bubbles we see too often in the world.  This is 'Grower Champagne' aka Farmer Fizz, and you don't want to miss it! 

The menu will be similar to the dinner menus that we have been working with the past couple of weeks, so expect to see bright vegetable plates, shareable items and locally sourced entrees.  Please write us if you would like to make a reservation at reservations@homespunfoods.com.  Dinner will be served from 5-9pm, so you can get home to see the ball drop, or just get yourself a nice restful night of sleep and start the new year feeling good!  (  <--- that's mostly for the parents out there ;) 

For real though, it is going to be a fun night, we are going to pop some really good Champagne and bring in 2023 right!  

Then on Sunday, we will host New Year's Day Brunch, which we expect to be busy, so please shoot us a note and make a reservation and we'll get you a table!  Who wants to be the first customer of the year?!

We are very excited to announce that we are now partnering with Matcha Thomas, and serving their Matcha Lattes down at the Dia Beacon Café.  Our staff took part in a training with Haile and Nia a few weeks back, and had so much fun learning the history of Matcha, and learning about the proper techniques to make these delicious vegan lattes.  Come see us down at the Café, you don't need a ticket to enter the café, and it is a lovely room for a Latte.

DINNER MENU THIS WEEKEND

Chef Becky DeYoe & Co have a delicious dinner menu ready for this weekend, with a number of new dishes ready to go!

Chili-Roasted Sweet Potatoes with chimichurri and crispy quinoa is one of the new dishes I am most excited about.  The sweet potatoes are roasted with a bit of ancho chili, to add some heat and give a smoky character to the dish, and the quinoa is deep-fried raw, giving it a nutty, crunchy flavor and bite.  The chimichurri has oregano, cilantro, parsley, shallot, garlic, jalapeño, olive oil, and red wine vinegar, lending a super fresh brightness to the dish, with flavors that really pop.  The sweetness in the potato tamps down the heat in the chili and jalapeño, so you get all the flavor of the peppers, elevating and accentuating the dish, with a heat that is warming, but not over the line.

We also have a new vegan entrée back again this week, based off of an Andalusian dish that is popular in Seville, espinacas con garbanzos.  Tomato Braised Chickpeas with spinach, roasted fennel, caramelized onions, smokey saffron broth & grilled sourdough actually stopped me in my tracks today.  I walked through the restaurant this morning when Becky was prepping the dish and had to stop to ask what I was smelling.  The flavors were so deep and inviting.  The chickpeas are cooked with tomato, onion, fennel, garlic, bay leaf, paprika, chili and saffron.  The broth has a little kick to it, with some smokiness from the paprika and the distinct, unique flavor of saffron.  Luckily, we're the only restaurant in a 50 mile radius with a few dozen wines from Andalusia, should anyone want to get adventurous with a very authentic Sevillan wine pairing!

Domaine des Rouges Queues | Maranges 'En Buliet' 2018
BY THE GLASS THIS WEEK FOR DINNER

Biodynamic wine from Burgundy this week! 

Isabelle and Jean-Yves Vaney began Domaine des Rouges-Queues with one hectare of vines in Maranges, beginning in 1998.  Today, they have grown to 6 hectares of vines in the villages of Maranges, Santenay and Hautes-Côtes de Beaune in 1998.   Their wines are hand-harvested, fermented spontaneously with native yeast which is ambient to their organic vineyards and cellar.  Rouges-Queues uses very little, if any, sulphur, and often ferments their reds whole-cluster, giving a lifted aromatic that balances a floral note against the bright red pomegranate and currant notes of the Pinot Noir.   I love these wines, and am really excited to share.  Côte de Beaune red burgundy is often leaner and more lithe than the heralded villages of the north, and this is a very pure and transparent, vibrant example.

Chili-Roasted Sweet Potatoes with chimichurri and crispy quinoa is one of the new dishes I am most excited about.  The sweet potatoes are roasted with a bit of ancho chili, to add some heat and give a smoky character to the dish, and the quinoa is deep-fried raw, giving it a nutty, crunchy flavor and bite.  The chimichurri has oregano, cilantro, parsley, shallot, garlic, jalapeño, olive oil, and red wine vinegar, lending a super fresh brightness to the dish, with flavors that really pop.  The sweetness in the potato tamps down the heat in the chili and jalapeño, so you get all the flavor of the peppers, elevating and accentuating the dish, with a heat that is warming, but not over the line.

We also have a new vegan entrée this weekend, based off of an Andalusian dish that is popular in Seville, espinacas con garbanzos.  Tomato Braised Chickpeas with spinach, roasted fennel, caramelized onions, smokey saffron broth & grilled sourdough actually stopped me in my tracks today.  I walked through the restaurant this morning when Becky was prepping the dish and had to stop to ask what I was smelling.  The flavors were so deep and inviting.  The chickpeas are cooked with tomato, onion, fennel, garlic, bay leaf, paprika, chili and saffron.  The broth has a little kick to it, with some smokiness from the paprika and the distinct, unique flavor of saffron.  Luckily, we're the only restaurant in a 50 mile radius with a few dozen wines from Andalusia, should anyone want to get adventurous with a very authentic Sevillan wine pairing!

Biodynamic wine from Tuscany this week! 

Stefano Amerighi is one of the greatest winemakers working in Tuscany today, working within biodynamic principles, farming organically, and diving deep into the terroir of Tuscany and learning how to work with Syrah in Cortona's warm, Mediterranean climate.  I love these wines, and am really excited to pour them with a little bit of bottle age.  The 2018 we have this weekend, has really turned a corner in the past few months, and is drinking deliciously right now.  15/glass this weekend at Dinner.

HOMESPUN FOODS
Every Sunday we are doing a no corkage BYOB night at Homespun for Dinner, so you can bring your own special bottle of wine that you’ve been waiting to share with friends and loved ones, without paying any corkage fee. We’re hoping this can turn into a thing, and people will bring out some special bottles on Sunday nights, and we can help turn Sundays into a bit of a wine hang here in Beacon. Here are some of our very favorite wine shops in the Hudson Valley, where you can undoubtedly pick up that special bottle!

Best Wine Stores in the Hudson Valley & Catskills

BEACON
Artisan Wine Shop — Opened in 2006 (the same year as Homespun Foods), Artisan played a big part in raising the culinary bar for Beacon. Specializing in a broad array of wines from around the globe, as well as a diverse portfolios of spirits (check out the mezcal section!), you can always find something new and exciting at a great price. The staff is also really awesome, with advice from anything from picking a bottle, to working out a food and wine pairing, to finding that perfect cooking wine for your risotto.

Dirty Bacchus — Steve Ventura opened Dirty Bacchus smack dab in the middle of the pandemic and hasn’t looked back. Specializing in natural wines from around the globe, everything in the shop is organic, vegan (if this is a head-scratcher for you, it means no egg white fining to filter the wine in the cellar) and everything has a bare minimum of sulphur, if any at all. The wines here are wild and from off the beaten path, think Moravia, Georgia, & Quebec. The thing I love about this shop, is that Steve tastes a lot of wine, and he follows his palate. A lot of natural wine shops can quickly become a place of collecting allocations and moving allocations, but Steve picks wines he loves, and it shows. Last May, Dirty Bacchus was featured in the drinks-industry-leading online magazine PUNCH, as one of America’s Best Specialty Wine Shops. Right on, Steve.

Paul Brady Wine — Paul Brady Wine here in Beacon focuses on all New York State products, featuring both on and off premise selections, meaning they’re both a wine store and a wine bar. I asked Paul how he would describe the shop, and he said, “We specialize in all New York wines, ciders, beers and spirits. Our motto is simple: to advocate for New York State agriculture and have a great time doing it.” You can find great selections here from both iconic growers as well as the avant-garde new generation of growers working here in New York State. With everything that has been bubbling in the city in natural wine for the past 20 years, it is an exciting time in New York Wine, and Paul Brady is a great place to track that energy.

COLD SPRING

Blacksmith Wines — Located in an old Blacksmith shop in Cold Spring, Blacksmith Wines focuses on a very specific niche, they sell wines from the greatest estates in the world in a multitude of vintages, that are incredibly hard to source through normal channels. The type of wines you tell your kids about years later. The Burgundy you only have one shot to ever taste, the Champagne from a vintage you thought didn’t exist anymore, the Barolo from a grower who sold his parcel of a certain vineyard more than a generation ago, those types of wines. The shop is also run by two of the best NYC sommeliers of the last twenty years, Kristie Petrullo Campbell and Charles Puglia. Kristie was Chef Sommelier at Jean-Georges, and prior to that she worked as a Sommelier at some of the best dining rooms in the city, including Craft, DANIEL, and Eleven Madison Park. When I first met Charles, he was Beverage Director at Blue Hill at Stone Barns where he worked for a number of years, after that Charles moved to take on the Beverage Director position at Le Coucou, Chef Daniel Rose’s extraordinary paean to French gastronomy. While there he also wrote the opening wine lists for Pastis and Verōnika. These two have major chops and connections and can source some crazy wines from crazy growers and vintages. Both have travelled extensively and understand wine on a deep level. The space is incredibly unique as well, feeling somewhere between a European wine cellar and an American horse stable, with a touch of the modern feel one might expect of a luxe loft somewhere in the Chelsea.

Flowercup Wine — Opened in 2017 by Cold Spring residents Eliza Starbuck & Eric Wirth, Flowercup Wine opened with the mission of being a retail space that could really add something to the community. Located on Main Street, Flowercup focuses on natural wines and a seasonal approach, helping you select the right wine for your mood, for the weather, the company and the dish. Lots of off the beaten path wines here that more conservative wine stores won’t carry because they’re ‘hand-sells’, things like Rufete, Sagrantino and Poulsard. So pony up, if you’re adventurous, for some great wines in Cold Spring!


WAPPINGERS FALLS
Viscount Wines & Liquor — Located on Route 9 South in Wappingers, Viscount has a great location being so close to Adam’s Fairacre Farms. Viscount prides themselves on their service, selection and price, and they really do offer great value. Sneak away into their glass room in the back with the temperature control and have a wander, you will definitely find some great wine at great prices. I have found difficult to find small grower Champagne here from the likes of Eric Rodez, 2012 Vosne-Romanée from Anne Gros at a great price, as well as some Tempier Bandol Rosé. Stroll the aisles and see what you find, the staff is great too, really helpful and really efficient.

KINGSTON
Kingston Wine Co. — This shop was one of the early innovators in bringing natural wines to the Hudson Valley. They grew a devout Instagram presence, and have been a champion of promoting local organic viticulture through collaborations with the likes of Rose Hill and Wild Arc. Lot so of great bottles within these walls.

Ester Wine & Spirits — Newcomer to N Front street, Ester Wine & Spirits has a really fun selection natural wines, and really great value selections. You will have no trouble finding nervy, vibrant, fun natural wines here, and a nice selection of Beaujolais to boot!

HUDSON
Grapefruit Wines — Located on Warren Street, Grapefruit has a lot of fun libations, including wines, ciders, co-ferments, amari, & apertifs. Located down the street from Kitty’s, this shop has what you need to pair something phenomenal with that Schnitzel! Also check out their Wine Share program, where the staff hand selects 2-4 wines for you each month. Go get adventurous!

Hudson Wine Merchants — So this shop is a big reason why I personally moved upstate. When I worked at il Buco, we had to close down for a couple of weeks during Superstorm Sandy, everything south of 14th St had to close. It was wild. I decided to drive upstate and visit Hudson because a lot of guests and co-workers kept telling me what a great town it is. I threw my bicycle on the back of the Buick and drove upstate. At every off-ramp at every service station, the queue of cars waiting for gas overflowed out onto the highway shoulders, because everyone from Jersey was coming up trying to get gas for their generators. It was a wild time. I stayed across the river in Athens, did a bunch of cycling, and would wander over to Hudson at night. I remember walking into this shop and being blown away. There were old vintages of Bordeaux, Brunello, there were crazy natural wines you often didn’t even see in the city, there was a bottle of Carema from a grower I had never heard of, there was a bottle of Jasnieres from the Loire. What is this place, I thought. Anyhow, that night planted a seed in my head, maybe you can work in food and wine and not have to live in a major urban market like NYC, SF or LA. This was the blueprint. It was possible. You could follow your vision and not pander to a market. I have worked events with the owner Michael Albin since then, and he is a great guy with a ton of passion for what he does. They do classes upstairs as well, and this is totally worth a trip if you’ve never been.

MARLBORO
The Wine Store — Marlboro is really lucky to have such a great wine shop. Joseph Cricchio opened the store 8 years ago, he explains, “Well, if I am being honest, The Wine Store found me. I was bartending by night at a NOLA cocktail bar on the Upper East Side and Managing an Italian restaurant in Queens during the day. I was on the brink of burnout when my parents asked if I would be interested in purchasing a wine shop in Marlboro.” Joseph told me about the feeling of the first deliveries showing up and hoping he could sell all of these wines, well eight years later, the shop is doing great, and features not only biodynamic Champagne and Burgundy, but also great everyday wines at great prices. The best wine shops do both, special occasion wines and Tuesday night wines can intermingle on the shelves, each with an abundance of quality.

ACCORD
Bluebird Wine — I like fun. I like music. I like Bluebird.

I reached out to Aaron on what separates his store from the herd and makes them so unique. Rather than parse out his words, I liked his reply so much, I want to include it in full, it makes a lot of sense to me on where their vibe comes from—

“I spent many years working in record stores in another lifetime and I try and run Bluebird more like that than a "traditional" wine shop. When people walk in the door we want them to feel like there is always something new to discover and we want them to take the time to dig around and ask questions and really engage in a conversation rather than it being so straightforward and transactional. We want to demystify and make the shop approachable and hopefully they walk out with something they were after or something new they've never tried.”

As somebody who has spent a lot of time in record stores, I love that idea of ‘oh you like that… you’ll love this!’ and the sense of discovery and milling around til you find something that grabs you.

LIVINGSTON MANOR
Upstream Wine & Spirits — Out in Livingston Manor in the Western Catskills, Upstream features a whole host of organic and biodynamic wines. We were out there this past summer for a camping trip, and I was so impressed with the shop. So many fun wines, we walked out with a bottle of COS ‘Rami’, a delicious white wine from Sicily from Insolia & Grecanico. The area is beautiful as well, and has a lot of nice restaurants, diners, BBQ stands and breweries. Worth a trip!

Top 5 Places To Eat in the Hudson Valley this December

We've been at it since June, and opening up for dinner, in a lot of ways, has felt like opening a brand new restaurant.  Developing a crowd, working with new farms, finding new regulars, developing dishes and watching the word get out into the community, it has been a process that has moved in fits and starts, but it has been exciting.  Like any new restaurant.  But now, it feels really good, especially during December when business slows down here in Beacon, to see our work recognized in Chronogram, a magazine that we all really love and respect.   

You can read the article HERE, we love their keen insight on dinner services and the menu, their POV on our wine program and the love that goes into that, and also we REALLY love that they encourage the reader to get a reservation (wink wink nudge nudge), that always helps us out, and allows us to give the best service to all of our guests.

TONIGHT & THIS WEEKEND
Radio-Coteau | Pinot Noir ‘Savoy’ 2016
BY THE GLASS THIS WEEK FOR DINNER

Radio-Coteau, located in Sebastopol, California, puts out incredibly delicious Coastal California wines, and tonight, we are featuring their 2016 Pinot Noir, a cuvée called 'Savoy'.  

'Radio-Coteau' is a French colloquialism for 'word of mouth', literally, it translates to 'Blasting from the Hillside,' a saying that originates in the Northern Rhône, one of our favorite regions here at Homespun.   The 'Savoy' wine that we will be pouring this weekend, comes from a gorgeous hillside vineyard in coastal Anderson Valley in Northern California.  The cool air of the Pacific and the northerly latitude help to give this wine a generous lift and balance, without sacrificing that sun-soaked California ripeness we all know and love.  The winery has been working with this organically farmed vineyard for nearly 20 years, and always harvests at night, to help retain the freshness of the whole-cluster berries that will spend 16 months in barrel before bottling.  The maritime influence, the vineyard exposition, the whole-cluster ferment, all play into why I love this wine so much, but their focus goes beyond just the finished product in the glass.  Their intention on the five following elements of the vineyard make them very intriguing to me, and put their wines to a different level.

1.  Biodiversity -- Not just in terms of Flora, but also Fauna, here we find goats, cows, sheep, and a commitment to leave over 10% of vineyard acreage wild to encourage migratory passageways for animals.

2.  Pollinator and Hedgerow Plantings-- Various pollinators and hedgerows were planted to provide vital pollen sources and nesting habitats for native bees and beneficial insects, as well as birds and other wildlife.

3.  Cover Cropping -- Grasses and legumes planted in the fall add important organic matter to the soil, while helping to sustain soil microbes and prevent topsoil loss from erosion.

4.  Habitat Restoration -- Radio-Coteau uses goats to help remove non-native species, nature's clean-up crew.  They also plant native oaks and perennial shrubs to help encourage native plants.

5.  Wildlife Structures -- Owl boxes and raptor perches were constructed to control the gopher population, with bat and bluebird boxes added to reduce insect outbreaks. Native bee boxes help pollinate the many fruit trees, flowering perennials, and annual plants around the estate.  All of this helps a vineyard work naturally and to avoid using harmful pesticides which are all too common in viticulture.  

We are really excited to be pouring these wines this weekend, come get a glass of one of California's best!

Also, we should mention, this wine would cost $30-$35 a glass in NYC if anyone was pouring it, so come try it at Homespun for $15/glass, it's a mega-deal!
